Darkness to Bliss
An exhibition of new works by Shahrzad Ghaffari 18 Sep - 4 Oct 2013 Darkness to Bliss is Shahrzad Ghaffari's first solo exhibition in London and will feature new works by the artist. A descendant of the renowned Iranian painters Sani-ol-Molk Ghaffari and Kamal-ol-Molk Ghaffari, Shahrzad continues a family tradition that spans more than 150 years.
Having exhibited in solo and group shows around the world, and been collected across continents, Shahrzad is coming to London with a fresh body of work that maps abstract journeys through the complexities of love, emotion and spiritual conflict.
Darkness to Bliss reflects Shahrzad's metamorphosis as an artist. Where once her art harnessed the clarity of legible words to bring a message into crystal focus, it is now probing ever further into the realms of ambiguity and feeling. The word – the sacred logos of ancient calligraphy is stripped of its formality and dissolves into bold, swirling shapes. Radiant colours sweep across the canvas, spiraling into the heart of experience unchained.
Oscillating between the primal and the poetic, the dance between word and impulse, between expression and intangible feeling, locks together into an elusive paradox that lies at the heart of the human condition. Internal meets external in a dissonant yet mesmerizing harmony that opens itself to subjective flows in the mind of the beholder.
Darkness to Bliss is anything but a linear progression. There is no beginning and there is no end, just the infinite dualism that is the elemental core of unfathomable eternity. Love, loss, loneliness, sacrifice, yearning, surrender and ultimately redemption all draw their power from shades of the abstract. And in this series, Shahrzad distils beauty, melancholy and inspirational passion into silent reflection, touching the darkness and yet caressing fleeting bliss.

Mario Sironi
22 Apr - 17 May 1993 On honeymoon that year in Arosa, Switzerland, he was introduced to Arturo Bryks, a former teacher at the Bauhaus, by Peggy Cripps, daughter of Sir Stafford Cripps, then President of the Board of Trade. Bryks showed him a tattered copy of Umberto Boccioni;s book Pittura Soultura Futuriste (1914) and aroused in him so great an excitement that Estorick decided to drive to nearby Milan and meet Sironi.
As Sironi had destroyed most of his early work, Estorick was able to buy only a little that can be described as Futurist or Metaphysical, demonstrating his direct links with Balla, Boccioni, Carra and de Chirico; the earliest work of which there was any great quantity in the studio were the drawings of eerie street scenes and deserted factories made during the latter half of the Great War and immediately after it. By the late 1920s, Sironi had turned his attention to popular culture, to political commentary and commercial advertisement (he worked for the Fiat motor company), and became and remained a prominent caricaturist for Mussolini’s official press, II Popolo d’Italia- an association that has since led to accusations that he was a Fascist. These accusations are not altogether justified, for the fascist minister Roberto Farinacci condemned him as degenerate (the Nazi’s favourite word for art of which they disapproved), and for the Party destroyed his fresco for the palazzo dell’ Arte in Milan; his support in 1943, after the fall of Mussolini, for the extreme Fascist Republic of Salo in Northern Italy, may well have been no more than a matter of survival at that time, for Milan was a stronghold of the Germans
