Struggle & Repression - From Soweto to New York

The life of black South African artist DUMILE in drawings and sculpture 1960-1991

At Frieze New York, 2017, Grosvenor Gallery will be exhibiting the work of South African artist Dumile (1942-1991) as part of the Spotlight Section. Exiled from his homeland by Apartheid, he lived in London and New York, until his death there in 1991. Dumile, unknown as he is, remains a major and key figure in history of Modernism in South Africa.  In the 1960's he emerged from the Township of Soweto in Johannesburg along with a generation of highly creative and dynamic artists, musicians and creatives.
