Aspects of Geometry
Our 2020 presentation for Art Dubai will now be displayed at the gallery. New work by Mohammad Ali Talpur, Wardha Shabbir and Elisabeth Deane will be shown along side works by minimalist pioneer Rasheed Araeen.
All the artists work in one way or another with geometry, calligraphy and minimalist aesthetics, often combining more than one element in their work.
This works will be on view at the Gallery from 26 March - 24 April 2020.
Due to the issues caused by Covid-19, please contact us by email if you wish to view the works : art@grosvenorgallery.com

Rasheed Araeen (b.1935) is a pioneer of minimalism and a colossal figure in South Asian and Western art. A champion of black artists in Britain from the 1960s onwards, his influence and importance within the landscape of 20th century art cannot be overstated. Inspired by his background as an engineer, calligraphic forms, geometry and Islamic history.
"Geometry was already profoundly expressed by Arab/Muslim artists more than a thousand years ago. This fact must now be recognised within the narratives of modern art history by making a connection between twentieth century geometric abstraction and the achievements of the Islamic civilisation."

"Stemming from my interest in the myriad contradictions that inform human behaviour, the path, or ‘Siraat’, has come to inform some of my recent work. Following this notion of the path, I take reference from the everyday 'Maps' that we see around us, both the physical markings and the non-physical realm of the mind.
"My laborious rendering of countless dots coming together as units to form an idea on surface is based on the ‘Nuqta’ or dot symbolizing infinity. The dots join to form a line, which becomes a single, self-perpetuating medium of self-realization."

"Language is one of the biggest inventions of humanity. Writing has been a method of documenting human ideas, information, creative expressions and secrets from private to public usage. In my work, I translate text, convert sounds into pictoral form, and free them from their original purpose of readability and communication."
Talpur's 'Optical Calligraphies' have their roots firmly in calligraphic heritage, whilst simultaneously presenting a starkly contemporary aesthetic. His work was recently on display at the Lahore Museum, as part of Lahore Biennale, curated by Sheikha Hoor Al-Qasimi.
