Chittaprosad Bhattacharya (1915-1978) was a self-taught artist, illustrator and poet. Born in Naihati, Bengal, he was educated in Chittagong, the main centre for revolutionaries against British rule in India.
He was an active member of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and refused admission to the Government College of Art and Crafts, Calcutta, when asked not to participate in political activities. His work is staunchly political, highlighting the plight of the poor and downtrodden of Indian society.
