This work was painted during the artist’s time in London (1956 – 1967). Whilst living in the city he studied at St Martin’s School of Art as an evening student, and later at the Hammersmith School of Arts. His first exhibition in London was held in 1958 at the Imperial Institute. The critic Eric Newton wrote to Imam on that occasion to say;
“I am very disappointed that I shall not see your exhibition as I am sailing for America… I have not seen your latest work, but if it is of the same quality as that you showed me a year ago the exhibition will be a good one. You have my permission to quote me on that.”
In 1959 Imam, along with Ahmed Parvez, Anwar Shemza, Murtaza Bashir and Saffiudin Ahmed formed The London Group. Their work was presented at Woodstock Gallery in 1959.
