11 December 2025 - 6 February 2026
First shown at the Hayward Gallery, London (29 November 1989 – 4 February 1990), The Other Story brought together artists of Asian, African, and Caribbean ancestry working in post-war Britain. Widely celebrated as a landmark moment, the exhibition confronted Britain’s colonial legacy and highlighted the contributions of artists who had long been marginalised within the art historical canon. Curated by artist, writer, and editor Rasheed Araeen, the exhibition responded directly to the “racism, inequality, and ignorance of other cultures” that characterised the political and cultural climate of late-1980s Britain.
Our exhibition, 35 years on, displays the work of all of the South Asian artists who participated in the show, and includes selected others. The works are displayed throughout the gallery and alongside archival information relating to the artists and The Other Story. The show complements the Paul Mellon Centre's lecture series on the work of Rasheed Araeen, taking place at the National Gallery in October and December 2025.
