RAZA / TANTRA: Black & White Aesthetics, Frieze Masters

Frieze Masters 2019

RAZA / TANTRA
SH Raza, Black & White Aesthetics

Grosvenor Gallery is delighted to announce its participation at Frieze Masters 2019 with a presentation of monochromatic works by Sayed Haider Raza: RAZA/TANTRA, Black & White Aesthetics.

The fair takes place in London’s Regent’s Park from 4–6 October 2019. We are located at stand C11 in the ‘Collections’ section of the fair, curated by Dr Amin Jaffer.

Having left India in 1950 Raza quickly established himself as a successful member of the Ecole de Paris. His French landscapes were typically painted in thick oils with a palette knife on board or canvas, later developing in to fully abstracted landscapes and finally geometric works inspired by the 'Bindu'.

By the mid 1960’s Raza had started his engagement with Indian philosophy and music, studying symbols and imagery of traditional temple art.  This saw a shift away from a European perspective in his paintings towards an abstracted aesthetic based upon Indian traditional forms. From the mid-1970s the 'Bindu' engrossed his practice till the end of his career.

We will be presenting rarely seen monochrome works from the 1970s-1990s,  accompanied by examples of Indian antiquities and tantric works on paper which share the same aesthetics.

The presentation will be accompanied by a catalouge written by Rebecca Heald and Anne Macklin, including period photos of the artist's studio that shows the classical sculpture, books and miniatures he was looking at for inspiration.
