Grosvenor Gallery is delighted to announce its upcoming exhibition South Asian Modern Art, 2019. The show features recent acquisitions, including the Olga Bogroff Collection of early works by Ram Kumar, which will be on display for the first time since they were first exhibited in Paris the 1950s. The exhibition will be open to the public from 5 - 28 June 2019.
The Olga Bogroff Collection features five early works by Ram Kumar, all dating from 1949, and exhibited for the first time in nearly 70 years. Two of the works were exhibited at the artist's first solo-show in Simla in 1949. This group is extremely rare and of historic importance.
The exhibition also features major works by some of the most important South Asian artists of the 20th century.
Highlights include; a rare and previously unknown Parisian landscape by Sayed Haider Raza. Maisons St. Jacques was painted from his studio window in 1957 and has been in a collection in the USA since the 1960s.
Also exhibited is a rare 1968 canvas by Ganesh Pyne, previously part of a private collection in Chelsea. The work depicts a scene from the Ramayana with the artist's characteristic dark undertones.
A large and important canvas by Francis Newton Souza, painted in Karachi in 1992 will also be displayed. The painting features in a video made during the artist's stay at the home of Pakistani collector and artist Wahab Jaffer.
Maqbool Fida Husain's 1959 painting 'The Nude and Three Horses' exhibited in the artist's 1960 exhibition in Frankfurt.
An interesting and atypical work by Syed Sadequain, Dancers and Still Life is painted on a folding screen and comes from the collection of Parisian dealer Jean Forges.
Other artists represented in the show include Krishen Khanna, Jagdish Swaminathan, George Keyt, Ismail Gulgee, Jamil Naqsh and Anwar Jalal Shemza, amongst others.
