"Breacan ( meaning 'chequered' in Scottish Gaelic) draws inspiration from the traditional Irish tartan. Crafted from leftover lines and cuttings from previous works, it reflects a commitment to sustainability by repurposing fragments. The fragments symbolise the lingering impact of colonialism, with its remnants embedded in our societal fabric. Tartan patterns traditionally use colours to signify different clans, with each design carrying a distinct heritage and identity. By erasing these colours, Breacan conveys the struggle of belonging and the challenge of navigating a fragmented identity, uncertain of where it truly fits. By merging these reinterpreted elements with the structured tartan pattern, the work explores how histories of domination continue to shape identities and traditions in subtle yet enduring ways."
