David Gwyther Broome Irwin, more commonly referred to as Gwyther, was celebrated for his abstract work. Born in Basingstoke, Irwin was educated in Dorset and began his artistic training at the Goldsmith’s College of Art, later studying at the Central School of Art in London until 1954. He gained notice at his exhibition at Gallery One in 1957, and subsequently represented Britain in the Venice Biennale. His most famous works consisted of assembled newsprint and fragments from advertisements. These paper fragments were worked into decidedly abstract yet delicate compositions featuring subtle shades. Irwin later taught at the Hornsey College of Art, The Corsham School and later the Chelsea College of Art before being appointed Head of Fine Art at the Brighton Polytechnic in 1969. The artist continued to produce works in his distinct abstract approach late in to his life.
