Following the declaration of war by the British Empire on August 4, 1914, one of the first shots to be fired was in Africa by Alhaji Grunshi, a sergeant major in the British West African Force on August 7, 1914. They were firing on the Germans in their colony of Togoland. The Great War had now become a World War!
