Jaroslav Hněvkovský, celebrated as the Slavic Gaugin, undertook the first journey to India in 1911 and stayed for two years, most of the time in Kerala. After the WWI he had a successful exhibition of his Indian works in London. It was on this occasion when he met Rabindranath Tagore and accepted his invitation to Santiniketan as an art teacher. He spent there the spring of 1922.
