Pakistan-born artist Rasheed Araeen originally trained as an engineer. His practice includes performance, writing, and painting but he is best known for his politically charged, geometric, minimalist sculpture.
Vertical, diagonal and horizontal lines are used in his work to reference the framework of social institutions, and the historical invisibility of black artists within European cultural history. This painted piece is one of a recent series of wall-mounted structures. It is characteristic of Araeen’s symmetrical compositions where contrasting colours are playfully juxtaposed. The diamond form, inspired by Islamic architecture and textiles, is a recurring motif in Araeen’s practice.
